Advanced Sodium-Ion Cells — NaCR (NaCrO₂-type) Layered Oxide

These NaCR-series sodium-ion cells are a practical, sustainable alternative to lithium-ion. Compared to LFP, they maintain stronger low-temperature performance and rely on abundant materials. The NaCR chemistry is a NaCrO₂-type layered-oxide cathode, delivering a nominal 3.05 V with a wide operating window and excellent cold-weather discharge capability.

Cylindrical Cell Size

  • 18650 — NaCR18650-1.3ER
    • Dimensions: 18.35 D × 65.2 L (mm)
    • Rated Capacity: 1300 mAh (0.2 C)
    • Nominal Voltage: 3.05 V
    • Weight: 36.5 ± 0.5 g

Key Features

  • Cathode: NaCrO₂-type Chromium layered-oxide sodium-ion for a higher usable voltage window than Prussian-blue or polyanion chemistries.
  • Cold-Weather Ready: Discharge down to −40 °C; at −20 °C and 1C the cell delivers ≥80% of nominal capacity (after standard charge).
  • Practical Power: Up to 6C burst discharge (7.8 A at 100% SOC, 25 °C) with low AC impedance.
  • Sustainable Materials: Sodium-based system reduces reliance on lithium and cobalt supply chains.

NFM vs. NaCR — What’s the Difference?

Characteristic NaCR (NaCrO₂-type Layered Oxide) NFM (NaNi₁/₃Fe₁/₃Mn₁/₃O₂ Layered Oxide)
Voltage Range ≈ 1.8 – 3.95 V ≈ 1.5 – 4.10 V
Nominal Voltage 3.05 V ≈ 3.10 V
Energy Density Moderate (higher than PBAs/polyanions) Higher (vs. NaCR)
Low-Temp Behavior Strong (≥80% at −20 °C, 1C) Good to moderate (chemistry-dependent)
Best For Cold-climate, cost-sensitive builds, general DIY packs Higher-voltage/performance packs

Cell Spot-Welding Recommendations

Sodium-ion cans prefer gentle weld parameters:

  1. Start at the lowest energy setting your welder allows
  2. Keep pulse time ≤ 1.5 s
  3. Increase energy in small steps only if the tab does not fully adhere
